So lovely to sit down for a few minutes with a cup of coffee and read about your week. Saving a hare and a deer in one week is fantastic! Your journal always makes me smile. x

my sister married a Dutch man. they moved to the UK for his work. some 20 years ago now. 2 children and managing a house build later, BREXIT force a move back to Holland, 4 years ago now.

My nieces went into a school for immigrants to learn the language, and keep their English and maths up for 8 months.

I think that though they didn't speak Dutch they were used to hearing it, I believe some went in, so learning it may have been easier for them. the learnt so much about other cultures, and were in lessons with people who has never been in a school environment before, their horizons were broadened!

Research shows that children who grow up bilingual may take a bit longer to work out which is which language wise, but that they have a better learning capacity in later life. Research also shows that if the 'second' language speaker is a dad, its unlikely he will speak to the children in his home language, as was the case with my brother in law. Still they are now fluent, and have been at main stream Dutch education system. the oldest at now 20 is at an art academy, the younger at 18, is coming to the end of her A level level studies. I am amazed by there skills.

My sister like you has struggled. Their household is English speaking, her husband Dutch, and her children Dutch speaking, so even though she is having lessons, they family often jump in to support, the girls often having a snigger at my sisters tenses or pronunciation. the Dutch are an obliging nation and if they detect an English speaker, they will often continue the conversation in English, which is super kind, especially for me..... but not so helpful for my sister.

I guess all this is to say i feel your pain and struggle, having experienced it through my sister. my own language shills are hopeless, and i think you are very brave for pursuing your dreams. i would most likely falter at the first hurdle.

I wish that it was that simple! I really hope that the time will come very soon that you will do something for the benefit of just yourselves 🤞🤞🤞
